Breaktime Bible Study:

Fighting Words

I am in the midst of lions; I am forced to dwell among ravenous beasts—men whose teeth are spears and arrows, whose tongues are sharp swords. Psalm 57:4 David is like a Daniel expect his lions are men. His soul is fighting off the hatred that is coming from the enemies. The enemy carried with them the weapon of the tongue. The real battle is in the mouths of the enemies, and the words are so sharp they can tear the soul but not with David. Even though we may be in a battle of words, we don’t have to participate. We can settle our hearts on terms that last for eternity. David found peace even as malicious words are flown around; he chose to dismiss their power. We friends can do the same. We don’t have to participate in the spiteful talk even about our enemies. The angrier people get, the more the mouth becomes an armory. But we know words have their origins in the heart: bitter heart, hard heart, hard words. God can soften our hearts and have it be a place of stillness filled with the mercy of God. We like David have a choice to make what we will allow being our weapon. What if we fight back with compassion. If someone slaps you on one cheek, turn to them the other also. If someone takes your coat, do not withhold your shirt from them. Luke 6:29 Today in the Workplace What are you fighting with?
