Breaktime: The Great Escape

The Great Escape

6 I said, “Oh, that I had the wings of a dove! I would fly away and be at rest. Psalm 55:6

You and I have probably felt this same way before−the kind of feeling which overcomes us when life is difficult, and we want to take flight. We all want to escape and find a place to go that will be safe, but the reality exists in the now. But like David, many of us may not like the current situation, so like David, we may desire to escape.

One of the ways we naturally want to cope is to run and find rest. But we can run as David did in Psalm 46.

God is our refuge and strength; a very present help in trouble.

2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea;

Psalm 46:1,2

This verse shows David’s heart as much as his emotion to want to fly away. His life was lived in turmoil much of the time, and his emotions often went there as well, like us. We all know deep in our heart; running away will not lead us to a better place because the problem follows. But what we can do is run to God as our source of strength. We no longer have to escape unless we run to the heart of God.
