Nothing is better than receiving a warm welcome to a new community, and that’s exactly what Newton’s RAGBRAI committee is hoping to give to riders on July 25th. For the five blocks spanning West Eighth Street North to West Third Street North on North Second Avenue, the committee is asking community members to line the streets for a big “Aloha” to Newton. Organizer Chantelle Lundberg expects the bulk of the riders will arrive starting at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 25 and continue until 6 p.m. Those wanting to participate are asked to park in the north lot adjacent to the Innovation Center to keep vehicles clear of the route. Decorations such as beach scenes and beach ball towers and arches will be on display, and volunteers are encouraged to get in the spirit any way they can.
The Pella City Council passed the first reading of an ordinance allowing minors into microbreweries with restrictions at their meeting Tuesday evening. If adopted, anyone under the age of 21 who wants to enter the establishments would have to do so with a parent or legal guardian over the age of 21, and can only be inside microbreweries from opening until 9 p.m. — both of which were amendments added after the council expressed concerns with allowing any adult to bring a minor in.
