Ice skaters rejoice – city staff in Pella are working on getting the ice skating rink at Caldwell Park ready for the weekend. City staff began applying the first layer of ice at around 8 a.m. on Wednesday. They finished adding the fourth layer at about 1:30 p.m., with the combined layers measuring about half an inch in thickness. More layers of ice will be added to the rink today and Friday until the ice rink is about two inches thick. Schedules of specific hours will be posted on site for open ice skating and hockey, as well as general rules for the facility and ice rink. Unfortunately ice skates will not be available to rent this year, but bathrooms should be ready for use by next week.
A South Central Iowa resident is being recognized for his entry in a popular photo contest; Warren Terpstra, of Sully, recently won an honorable mention for his photo “Country Road” in the “Capture the Heart of America Photo Contest.” Terpstra’s photo was taken in Kalona, Iowa on a rainy day after he and his wife exited a country store. The photo features a buggy driving down a country road. The contest is hosted by Silos & Smokestacks National Heritage Area, which has held the contest for the past 10 years. Last year Terpstra won first place and an honorable mention for two photos entered in the same contest; he says rural landscape photography is his retirement hobby.
