Pella Community High School is in the process of launching an apprenticeship program to help students gain real world experience prior to graduating high school. Eric Nelson, principal at PHS, said the school was contacted by the Governor’s STEM Council about providing a pilot program for apprenticeships. Welding will be the only apprenticeship program offered next year, Nelson said. However, the school is looking into another program for an electrical or engineering technician. A school in South Carolina is also working on developing a similar apprenticeship program.
On what would be Gary Vermeer’s 100th birthday, and Vermeer Corporation’s 70th anniversary as well, Mary Andringa is publishing a book about life lessons she learned from her father. “Remembering Dad: Gary Vermeer’s Daughter Recalls His Life and Legacy,” reflects on Andringa’s memories of her father, coupled with themes of life lessons she learned from him. Andringa also interviewed family, friends, employees and business associates as a part of the book.
