A grass fire near Grinnell appears to have taken the life of an elderly man this past weekend. On November 25th, shortly before 3 PM the Grinnell Fire Department responded to a report of smoke between Highway 6 and 20th Street west of Grinnell. Firefighters found a fast moving grass fire just west of 101 Highway 6. As firefighters attacked the fire they located the victim at the fire’s point of origin. The victim, identified as 86-year-old Dr. Bernhard Wiltfang, was pronounced dead at the scene. The fire burned approximately 40 acres and 70 hay bales; both the fire and fatality appear to be accidental in nature.
No one likes to see flashing lights from a police car in the rear view mirror, and the Oskaloosa Police Department is hoping their efforts to raise awareness about traffic laws can reduce those stops. With a grant from the Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau, some Oskaloosa officers have been working overtime to raise awareness of seat belt usage, speeding, traffic lights, and alcohol enforcement; the grant is covering overtime of the officers who decide to participate in the program.
