Want a front-row view to the holiday lights display in Ottumwa Park? You’ll have your chance to do so by foot on November 17th. For one day the Ottumwa Chamber of Commerce permits the Holiday Lighted Hike; the 13th annual one-mile walk gives folks an opportunity to get a close-up preview of the seasonal light display from 5:30 – 8:30pm. Volunteer Carla Herteen, member of the Wapello County Trails Council, says it’s the only chance to see the light display from outside a car. Hikers must start by 7:30pm and are reminded to dress properly and bring a flashlight. Refreshments will be available and all funds raised from admission will go towards trail improvements.
The windmill at Sunken Gardens in Pella may soon be getting a much-needed face lift – According to Jeanette Vaughan, community services director for the city, the list of repairs is long: The brick foundation is cracked and needs repairing and sealing; structural beams, columns and braces are rotting, weakening the support system, & the interior has rotting boards and cracks that need sealing. The windmill turned 80 this years and hasn’t been repaired in decades; the City Council hopes the total bill will be about $150,000.
