A 5k fun run and wheelbarrow race will be held this spring to help preserve the last remaining building of a long-gone town. The Coal Ridge Church stands just north of Highway S71 and Lake Red Rock. The church and its adjacent cemetery are all that’s left of the town of Coalport. The 5K (3.1 mile) event begins at 9 a.m. April 7, with the wheelbarrow race at 10:15 a.m. in the Whitebreast Beach parking lot. Anyone signing up by March 1 will get a T-shirt and an early bird discount – you can register online at GetMeRegistered.com/CoalRidgeChurch5K
Shouting erupted at Monday’s Ottumwa school board meeting when speakers from an overflow crowd were limited to seven in number and a total of 15 minutes. The issue – problems with student discipline in classrooms. Despite Board President Leisa Walker’s preemptive statements, parents became upset when public comments were cut off. Many parents expressed their concerns that discipline was not consistent, with some claiming their children were afraid to go to school; teachers responded by saying staff were constantly being asked to do more with less.
