The Gift of Selflessness
Written by Drew Paden

"Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interest but each of you to the interests of the others. In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus."
Philippians 2: 3-5

In a world that constantly preaches on capturing the "American Dream," and becoming "successful," it is easy to lose sight of a gift such as selflessness. While selflessness in the form of personal ambition and interests is a fruitful gift and one that we are called to have, we often forget about selflessness in our relationships.

In this passage from Philippians 2, Paul urges the church in Philippi to strip off selfishness in all areas of their life. It is easy to hone in on our visible actions, and material possessions but the Bible repeatedly gives us valuable wisdom on how to be selfless with them. But what does it mean to have this in relationships? Paul tells us right here: "value others above yourselves," and have the "same mindset as Christ Jesus." When you value the people in your life more than you value your own, your relationship with them is not affected by the bad days you have, or how you are feeling at the moment. It is not about what YOU want or need, but what THEY want and need and this is having the mindset of Jesus. He did not need to leave paradise to redeem the world, but We needed Him to. He displayed the ultimate sign of selflessness in His relationship with us.
. . .

Our earthly relationships will grow and flourish when we live this way, but in our relationship with Jesus, it is a necessity. We cannot allow whatever we have done, and whatever is currently happening in our daily lives, to influence what is true every day. Jesus gave the sacrifice that never stops giving, and never changes. We have to build and develop our relationship with Him based on what He has done, and what He is doing, not the other way around. Having a selfless relationship with Jesus is to love and meet Him every day, because every day He is waiting to love and meet YOU.
